What educators are saying

This is one of my favorite projects to do in my chemistry class. It really shows how well students understand the periodic trends. I also learn a lot about what my students are interested in through this project.
My students loved this project. It was very helpful with showing students periodicity. I appreciated how clear the instructions were.

Description

My students love this Periodic Table project for which they design their own Periodic Table because it gives them a chance to express themselves, and to own the concept of periodicity! I always notice an increase in chemistry-enthusiasm during and after this project. I introduce this after I teach my students about the groups, periods, families and sections of the periodic table.

The possible themes for this project are practically limitless because kids come up with the most interesting topics to categorize into element families.

Be amazed by your students' creativity and relish in the fact that you are improving their higher-level thinking skills!

There is an EDITABLE version included, as well as detailed student instructions, teacher notes, examples, and grading rubric!

There is now a digital version included, too. This includes a digital version of the student project directions, a Google Slides 'canvas' for collecting images and for creating the Periodic Tables, a works cited slide with directions, and a digital Class Gallery for putting the students' final projects for one another to view!

Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms. Examples of properties that could be predicted from patterns could include reactivity of metals, types of bonds formed, numbers of bonds formed, and reactions with oxygen. Assessment is limited to main group elements. Assessment does not include quantitative understanding of ionization energy beyond relative trends.
