Elements & Symbols The Original Periodic Table The Modern Periodic Table How it’s Organized Organzation of the Groups

Elements & Symbols - An element is the _________________________________ - They are set out according to their _____________________ and are represented by a _________________ - It is either one capital letter or a capital and a small letter - Most of the time the letters are the first in the element’s name - English is not a very scientific language so very few symbols have anything to do with the English name of the element - Scientists use many languages, but mostly Greek or Latin Carbon - Oxygen - Lithium - Gold - Silver - Mercury -

The Original Periodic Table: -Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834 – 1907) was a scientist and chemistry professor who was the first to try to organize the elements -At first Mendeleev was working with about 60 known elements - Now there are over 110 known elements and more new ones are still being discovered

The Modern Periodic Table:

How it’s organized: Even though there may be spaces, the rows move from left to right according to the ___________________the elements have Each row is called a ________________ and each period has the same number of shells or orbitals

How it’s organized: Each column is called a ____________ or ____________ The elements in each column are grouped according to specific characteristics that they share There are groups that are given particular names

Organization of Groups: ________________ : These are on the far left (first group) and are VERY REACTIVE Because of this reason, they are not often found alone in nature; they are usually bonded with another element ____________________: These are in the group second from the left and are not as reactive as their neighbours

Organization of Groups: ____________________________ : These are located in the middle They are special because they can demonstrate different behaviours in different settings

Organization of Groups: _________________ : These are located in the second last group (second column in from the right) They are the most reactive of the NON-metals ___________________ : These are located in the last group (first column in from the right) They are the least reactive of the NON-metals

Organization of Groups: _________________ : These are located between the metals and the non-metals in a step-like pattern They have properties of both metals and non-metals
