My penguin and cat illustrations are done in watercolors, gouache, and colored pencils.
my garden is my inspiration and studio for many of my nature photographs.

About CatbirdDesign

It all began with the “Penguins and Cats” calendar, which has been a very long time coming. I created several of the illustrations back in the early 80’s with the intention of eventually publishing a calendar. The project ended up morphing into a short lived T-shirt silkscreen business called “Penguins” and after a few years, family, work, and life pushed the whole idea into the backseat. I matted and framed the illustrations and hung them in my children’s rooms for a decade or two.
Then in 2014, the itch to see the project come to fruition returned and out came the watercolors, gouache, and colored pencils...The remaining calendar illustrations were completed by the summer of 2015 and since I was on a roll, I decided to expand the inventory selection with greeting cards and nature photos.
The various penguins and cats represent me or my kids. Most are engaged in activities that we enjoy, excel in, or wish we were better at, while others are just a slice of life. Strangely, there are no penguin or cat artists included…perhaps next year.
The holiday cards are a combination of my illustrations and digitally created embellishments.
The nature photography is a fairly new medium for me and it happens to pair well with my passion for gardening. I hope to develop a line of photo greeting cards in the near future.
All of my “CatbirdDesign” products are digitally printed on high grade mediums I hope you enjoy browsing through my shop and that my images make you smile…
