This is a long shot but I've set up a new website for a company and I want the website to be the number 1 hit on google when people search for a certain word on google with teh Ireland radio button highlighted.
How does google return the first web hit?
Is it down to what you enter into your meta tags or the number of hits a site recieves, or how can I get my website out there to maximise the hits for business?

A google spider will eventually find your site and you'll be added to it's index.

It can find it within a couple of days. But your site might take months to appear on listings. So just be aware of that.

it's not just about the metatags, organic search engine optimization takes a helluva lot more work than that. When the googly spiders come along they will index your site but its very likely to come up toward the latter end of the results...To come first on google you need a combination of the following

    (1) Highly optimized content - as in content that is very relevant to the topic, and also keyword rich (i'm sure the OP has about 10 keywords he'd like to rank highly on....)

    (2) Site free of coding errors - while the website may look fine aestethically, this doesn't always mean its error free. If your website contains specific errors, Google may mistakenly classify your website as using black hat practices and not rank it at all!

    (3) Links. It's all about the links. Seriously. If you want to rank first you need hundreds if not thousands of sites linking to you (obviously dependant upon the competition). The higher the quality and popularity of the site that links to you, the better... So it's probably a good idea to try to get listed on relevant blogs, directories etc.

All in all, organic SEO is a long term process, and it will take a while to move up through Google's ranking. If you'd like some advice on your own site, I'd be happy to help.

tbh, the easiest thing to do is to take out a google ad.

My experience is that google adwords is the key.
Unless you commit to even the smallest "Cost per Click" you're not going to compete. This is assuming your search words are generic - and you have competition for results.

If you are trying to generate hits using some unusual phrase or name then you won't have the same problem.

Google adwords is very easy to set up, and though you do need to give them a credit card number you can set a very low maximum amount allowed per month.

I've also found the spidering process quick using the add url link above.

I was in the top 5 rankings in most of the major search engines within about 2 months when I set up a website last year. #2 in google. I did nothing fancy just metatags, and had my page full of the keyword I was looking to be searched under (which wasnt hard as that was what I was selling !!!) You can submit your page to the search engines to be spidered and it is done quicker

yeah, metatags are the key IMO, my site was showing up at number #2 for a while there, until some major changes on the site...

Anything and Everything you needed to know about SEO (Search Engine Optimization).. Theres tools there to get an idea of your pr, submit your site for crawls, Alexa related stuff and DMOZ along with Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, Google - I've put Google last on purpose.

I'm getting quite concerned at a lot of recent very bad press in relation to them. They have class action law suits out against them for charges that include Child Pornography related issues. There CEO (Or one of the CEO's) recently admitted they are having a 'Machine Crisis'. Class action law suits due to click fraud. Estimates by the company are now being seen as falling way short of actual figures and where Google thought they may only be liable for 30 million, the actual figure claimed is closer to three times that!

Anylists though say the figure could be a lot higher and if prooved could start costing Google up in the 5 to 10 billion mark.
Source of class law suit - click fraud
    Source of Google Machine Crisis
Source of Googles controversial Child Porn Charges

This has been a re-occuring scenario for Google of late though they still are reciaving reasonable stock reports.

MSN are being spoken of a lot as being a very real contender to challenge Google. Amazon have recently dropped Google for Microsofts MSN Search.
Source of Amazon switch to Microsoft

And this is only scratching the tip at what your hoping to achieve, valid html code especially to the latest or most upto date standards set out by W3C are all deciding factors these days. But anyway - those links there will get you started on what your trying to achieve.

Wish you luck - you'll need it!

    :)

edit: hmm - seems as if Google have a defender Counter Source to Google machine crisis article (Well just trying to keep it balanced)..

It still doesn't explain the other above stuff which if is prooved are surely going to cause them some concern...

SEO is extremely difficult if your keywords are in any way competitive.

narcissism: what is your website about?
